Heartworm Preventatives
Chewable
The Heartgard Plus chewable prevents the invisible threat of heartworm disease and controls two species of intestinal roundworms worms and three species of hookworms for 1 month. It is recommended for dogs 6 weeks of age and older. For dogs over 100 pounds, use the appropriate combination.
Chewable
Interceptor Plus (this chicken-flavored chewable is for 1-month protection against heartworm disease and also protects against 4 intestinal parasites (hookworm, roundworm, whipworm, and adult tapeworms). It is recommended for dogs and pups 6 weeks and older and 2 pounds or greater
Chewable / Combination
Simparica Trio chews prevent heartworm disease, kills adult fleas, and is indicated for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations, the treatment and control of tick infestations with lone star tick, Gulf Coast tick, American dog tick, black-legged tick, and brown dog tick, and the treatment and control of roundworm and adult hookworm infections for one month. It is for dogs and puppies 8 weeks of age and older and weighing 2.8 pounds or greater.
Topical / Puppies
Revolution topical provides 1-month protection against fleas and heartworms, treats and controls ear mites and sarcoptic mange, and controls ticks infestations due to American dog ticks. Revolution can treat puppies as young as 6 weeks and less than 5 pounds.
Important Note
All dogs should be tested for heartworm infection before starting a preventive program.
Flea and Tick Preventatives
Chewable
Nexgard is a soft, beef-flavored chew that kills fleas and ticks. It prevents flea infestations by killing fleas fast before they can lay eggs. It prevents the infections that cause Lyme disease by killing blacked-legged ticks. A chew is effective for 1 month and it is FDA-approved for puppies as young as 8 weeks, weighing 4 pounds or more.
Topical
Frontline Gold is a topical medication that kills adult fleas, flea larvae/eggs, ticks, and chewing lice for 1 month. The topical is easy to apply and waterproof 24 hours after application. Protection begins 48 hours after application. It is safe for use on dogs and puppies 8 weeks or older.
Chewable
Credelio kills adult fleas and is indicated for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations and treatment and control of tick infestations (lone star tick, American dog tick, black-legged tick, and brown dog tick) for 1 month in dogs and puppies 8 weeks and older and 4.4 pounds or greater.
Chewable / 12-Week Dose
Bravecto kills fleas and prevents flea infestations for 12 weeks, kills black-legged ticks for 12 weeks, and American dog ticks for 8 weeks. It has not been shown to be effective for 12-weeks' duration in puppies or kittens less than 6 months of age.
